Rockets became increasingly popular from the mid-16th century. Mughul rockets had a range of up to 1,000 yards, some being fitted with explosive heads and others being designed to skim across the ground in order to frighten horses.
It was seeing such weapons in use in 1806, that a British army officer called Congreve took the idea home and developed a similar weapon for use in the Napoeonic Wars.
