From the very beginning of the Mughul Empire, the first ruler, Babur, decided to use elephants in his armies. He had been so impressed by their performace against him on the battlefield at the First Battle of Panipat, he is quoted as saying that one elephant was worth 500 cavalry in battle. Maybe a slight exaggeration, but certainly an admiration that would see elephants used througout the entire 250 year history of the Mughuls.
This model represents probably the simplest and commonest style of war elephant, simply crewed by a driver and a spear/javelinman.
