Product Description

"Taiping Era" is a set of tabletop rules written specifically for land battles in the period from the 1st Opium War to the end of the Taiping Rebellion in China (c1840 – 1865). During this period the Qing dynasty faced serious threats both internally and externally, and barely managed to survive them as the Western powers levered open China’s closely controlled borders and ports in the name of trade, whilst a group of pseudo-Christians led by a man who thought he was Jesus’ brother tried to overthrow the Emperor and drag the Celestial Kingdom into the modern world. Using a gridded playing area and innovative rules, Taiping Era" enables games at a Divisional level and above, with the lowest level of resolution being battalion or “ying”. The game has unique mechanisms not previously seen in a set of rules for army level combat, which have been devised and adapted specifically for the period and the region, and do not treat it as just another set of scenarios for generic colonial rules. The author is a historian, wargamer and blogger who has written numerous sets of wargames rules and games. He produced several games for by the Society of Ancients as re-subscription incentives, when there was such a thing. His blog, "Wargaming for Grown Ups" contains more information on these rules, with photographs and reports of games in play. He also wrote "Northampton 1460" a board game of the Wars of the Roses battle of that name, which was published by the Northamptonshire Battlefields Society. He can usually be found on their stand at many wargames shows in the UK. More recently he went back to his roots as a historian and published "The Battle of Edgcote 1469 - Re-evaluating the evidence" to mark the 550th anniversary of the battle. It went on to win the Northamptonshire History Forum Award for best publication in 2019. “Taiping Era” is his third set of rules for the “Wargaming for Grown Ups” imprint, following on from the successful “To Ur is Human” Sumerian rules, and “It’s Getting A Bit Chile” that cover the Saltpetre War between Peru, Chile & Bolivia. He also edited and developed “Dicing with Death”, a set of gladiatorial combat rules, with Derek Henderson, also published by Wargaming for Grown Ups.
